Reclaimed: a sound & sight experience at a stop on Brooklyn's Underground Railroad.
Included will be projection on the site and construction surrounding 227 Duffield, WPA-era recordings of former slaves, as well replaying of historically significant recordings with nationalistic and dissenting themes.
Touching on issues of race and African-Americans’ relationship with America, sound is used to narrate the conflicting “double consciousness” that can arise from being of African descent and American.
On the site where this historic home was saved from New York City’s attempted eminent domain seizure, Reclaimed reacts to this little known historic home living in the shadow of rapid construction, and highlights the opportunities and conflicts that still exist today, long after Brooklyn’s abolitionist heyday.
